On shattering illusions, with Software Freedom Day 2012.

We do not own what we create simply because we’re creating nothing. Possess and create are illusions inherited from CAPITALISM ideology. Particularly if we’re invoking KNOWLEDGE/ SCIENCE. This reminds me of a discussion I had with a doctor telling me about her patent and how certain laboratory argued about her having the patent because they were the first to put the idea into practice. While she was trying to convince me how all the members of her laboratory defend her position and her right, I thought what if both are right, everything is possible with the human brain, we’re made the same way and no one can explain how ideas get constructed within the human mind, and within the space of human ideas. So what prevents me from having the same idea as you, what makes it impossible to think the same way even we’re not sharing the same geographical situation???

Create then possess lead certainly to sell. You can tell me but what’s wrong with it? Hhhh this is because you’re very accustomed to this process of “create”-possess-sell, but are you very used with it to the point to think badly of everything given for free???  If only someone could talk me into disbelieving that there is something wrong in it, THERE is something wrong with creating knowledge, possessing it with a copyright or some stupid patents and preventing people from using it unless they buy it, unless they have money. I’m not going to discuss why “create and possess” are illusions spawned by the spirit of CAPITALISM, it’ll take a whole article ;).  Instead, I honestly intend to talk you out of using/selling something that you cannot control, that you don’t know what it is exactly. To a lesser extent you don’t need me to talk you out of buying this kind of things, but let’s see….

It’s difficult to approach this subject because at the same time that I disagree with Create-Possess-sell knowledge, I’m not against buy and sell. There is nothing wrong with buy and sell, but to pretend creating knowledge and makes everything related belongs to you, possess it and prevent the whole humanity from using it unless they pay for it, this is real nonsense, and those doing it are just getting a bit paranoid. No one was born as knowledgeable person, everyone’s got to go to school or at least learn, in his own, matters that people before him have worked hard to understand and document.

This discussion brings me to talk about the Software freedom day 2012 at Technopark/Casablanca where Mr.

Zannane, a speaker during the day, talked about Open Things, something like open source software, where everything is open to everyone and where an individual is aware he has a choice. For instance, digital formats, navigators, operating systems and other open source software that enable the user whoever he is, to know what’s inside, to control the behavior of the product he’s using and even to alter it. Closed formats, OS and stuff makes fun of you by buying you a closed box that you can’t even to be sure about it, whether it’s secure or not, whether it goes against your policy of privacy… Mr Zennane also blamed the government for having a policy that leave the user/the consumer with no choice, having only Microsoft product installed at the machines, the government is fooling people by making them see nothing but Microsoft products on their laptops and machines.

Mr. Baina, a speaker too, considers that although we’re claiming using open source solutions we’re too far from using it as an IT strategy that includes using open source solutions as the first priority when it comes to choosing a solution, while of course keeping in mind choosing the best of the best.

Mr Baina giving a talk.

Mr. Baina was quite explicit about the policy of “Maroc Numeric Cluster 2013” that ignores including the free and open source software, and he said: “free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is a unique opportunity for emergent countries to develop knowledge, brand equity, make foreign currency economy, and real local software industry.”using China, brazil, India and South Africa as an example to follow. And also explaining that relying only on what the Offshore brings, we’ll end up one day with nothing.

Nextma, a Moroccan society promoting FOSS, was behind the event, which is a very good thing. Especially because we’re used to contradictions when it comes to events like this, you find an event about freedom of speech prepared by the most dictator of the world, you attend to a conference about humans rights and you find it sponsored by one of the big assassinates of the world, just like with the “Peace” article of mine. But with the SFD2012 it was great and with no ideological contradictions background. I was expecting a talk by the Nextma’s CEO, Mr Elkafil, but they changed the event’s program. It was very cozy there especially with Amarochan’s use of Moroccan dialect. Mohamed Amarochan, from Tangier and belonging to the Mozilla community, presented Mozilla and emphasizes the difference between Firefox as a project of Mozilla and Mozilla. Many other speakers from the open source community presented projects they are working for such us OpenERP, JOOMLA, Ubunto, Archlinux and Drupal. Ayyoub Allali, the cool speaker about Drupal and one of the few Moroccan programmers working for Drupal explained how it’s easy to participate in an open source project by just doing whatever you can beginning from designing a logo to writing pieces of codes. Ayyoub’s ultimate reason to work for open source projects is having fun. Plus, it provides you with skills programmers need. The audience was very enthusiastic about FOSSs to the point that one of them, participating in the debate, demanded that persons in charge of FOSS should change their “discours sentimental” when advertising open source solutions, he added that IT managers and the government should be aware that the use of FOSS “est une solution rentable aussi”.

Ayyoub and Drupal.

The moral? Oh no it’s difficult to talk on behalf of the event organizer or the speakers. So I’ll say the moral according to me was that emergent countries, people, me and you, professionals and governments should face their fears and take a step towards FOSSs. That we should include working (not only if you get paid) without that obsession of POSSESS what we “produce”. FOSS is a grown solution that should earn our trust.

Presenting Mozilla, by AMAROCHAN.

Use open source solution and at least use a solution that you’re sure enough about its behavior. Stop this paranoia of create and possess.

I believe in relativity. In fact, I always try to be as respectful as I could to other’s point of view. I know you, friend or unknown, do it, because you’re reading this post by now. But I’m not sure about what’s relativity to you. People believing in truth may see a subject as the sum of different points of view the same as with the elephant of Plato, when some blind people gathered around it and begun touching trying to identify it. Each one describes the part that had been touched and claims that’s the whole thing. Hehe, I’m not talking philosophy. The ELEPHANT now is ridiculously PEACE. Don’t blame my naïveté. I always thought that peace as a word has incontrovertible meaning. No killed people, no frightened children. In my mind there was no room for relativity concerning the word PEACE. Moreover, the word isn’t any technical jargon. You, I and kids surely talked PEACE once.

Now, I’m skeptic. Skeptic, skeptic, skeptic. There are people who  think that PEACE is killing people, frightening children and worse. Use of internationally prohibited weapon is a rudimentary aspect of a very PEACEFUL person. And you can’t say no to the fact that the most peaceful place in the word is the Middle East, especially, especially the occupied territories or PALESTINE. A smart reader that you are.

Of course as a reader, you expect me to convince, to reason with you but it’s much simpler than reasoning. It’s called jumping to conclusions. Actually, I would like to tell you that I’m a scientist. And I’m fond of every physicist’s work and personality particularly if the physicist is Alfred Nobel. You know for sure Mr. Nobel’s will:

“The whole of my remaining realizable estate shall be dealt with in the following way: the capital, invested …………..the interest on which shall be annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind. The said interest shall be divided into five equal parts, which shall be apportioned as follows: one part to …………………………….and one part to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.

From the Will of Alfred Nobel

And you know for sure that GREAT KILLER: Shimon Perez, Yitzhak Rabin, leaders of the israeli mossad, who had orphaned thousands of children and… Who, even the illusions of the media couldn’t hide their horrendous attacks to very innocent people and children.

Shimon Perez and Yitzhak Rabin are Nobel Peace Laureates. Credibility of the Nobel Peace prize is intact, but the meaning of PEACE shouldn’t be. PEACE, now, is killing, frightening; not only PEACE, this SHIMON PEREZ, his brothers and supporters are using their tanks to alter the geography of the earth at the expense of the indigenous people.

These Nobel Peace Laureates and their supporters are changing facts and we, now, read pack of lies in History. I’m not a historian but more I’m a witness. You too are. The tank, the very peaceful tank is now altering everything like a cancer at the expense of others. They continue now: money buys everything, the tank kills every resistance. Even words, even the peaceful PEACE isn’t peace any more.

Killers with Nobel Peace Prize. Pfffffffff….

With all due respect to Alfred Nobel.

We should learn to see the good side in things. It’s a healthy lifestyle and it’s also a sentence to rehearse in order to feel better after a bad experience.

It always strikes me how scared people are when you begin to talk BAD SIDES. Talking bad sides is bad, it’s not healthy and of course it doesn’t help feeling any good. Here I’m not mentioning facts to which we’re related emotionally. I mean I’m talking about facts, mere facts not relating to us emotionally. For instance, critics!!!

I cannot understand why one should talk only GOOD SIDES to feel better.  It’s childish to twist facts in order to feel better. Instead of learning to see the good sides of things, I think we should learn to see both and grow up. Yes, because ‘the world is full of ugliness……… as well as beauty’ as Pr.B.K said. We should face Ugliness, be able to taste bitter food and swallow it. Your very own impartiality shouldn’t be ceded to the dislike/fear of the BAD.

Honestly, bad, good, blabla…… It’s all relative, and also how we do feel when thinking BAD SIDES or GOOD SIDES is also relative to the person. (GOOD+BAD) SIDES are not the whole SIDE. Synergy between the two SIDES is required to approach the whole thing and may be to feel better too!!! TV reinforces the sense of talking, appearing, and bringing out only only the GOOD SIDE. Marketing spirit intrudes into the very thin idea, talk and… of our life and melted into our way of analysis to the point that one confuses BEAUTYFUL with GOOD.

Actually, I do like talking BAD SIDES and that’s why I appreciated very much the work of Pr. Barbara Kellerman when she wrote about BAD LEADERSHIP. You know the fuss about LEADERSHIP blabla… Everyone wants to be a leader, goodness!! But Barbara fascinated me by her BAD SIDES talking. She talked about the bad leadership, described it. Enough courage to talk about it, what makes bad leadership and more she categorized it according to several criteria. Undoubtedly, we all have encountered this kind of leadership, in school, clubs…

This blog is all about words. Thoughts shaping words, words shaping worlds, and of course worlds shaping words. One of the most widespread blabla: PRODUCING GREEN TECHNOLOGY.

During these two years, I was a regular attendee to GREEN ICT seminars. Researcher from other countries, PhD students, and professors from our university came to give talks about their research. I enjoyed it very much, especially when there were many people and everyone’s field is different from others. Students and professors exchanging ideas and asking bizarre questions. It pleased me to see a mixture of fields, points of view trying to approach one particular topic, always, far from theirs.

The most enjoyable seminar was about Matrix theory and applications. A very young man from Supelec talked about the Matrix theory. I can tell from the talk that the theory is here to cope with the imperfections of the ordinary statistics. Many statistical theorems came to describe behavior of a particular phenomenon if we were given only limited (either at time, space or frequency) number of observation. When observing a phenomenon and extracting data, the classical theory of statistics deals only with one dimension data. The laws of classical statistics doesn’t survive when dealing with multidimensional data, these laws just gave wrong, distorted and biased results when trying to predict or at least guess the behavior when given only limited number of observation. I mean by guessing, given n values, can you guess the behavior of these values if n goes to infinity? Matrix theory is here to suggest other techniques and perspectives based on linear algebra (especially using eigenvalues…).  The green part here, lol, was matrix theory to enable green wireless technology.

Amazing things, just amazing things. Other seminars were about game theory, cognitive radio, 4th generation, cloud computing, interference management….

Many researchers at GREEN ICT worked on GREEN aspect topics as PhD thesis or internships. It’s all about information technology, network communication and staff. And it’s all about increasing the percent of money gained by reducing base station energy consumption for cellulars, spectrum band utilization, datacenters energy consumption. Money and money… it’s all about money. Money has come to share interests with Nature. And we’re here with labeled GREEN technology. If the world is shaped for us, or it is here for us, we should witness sort of convergence of interests. This sort of convergence remind me of the imaginary GRAVITY TRAINS: a transportation mean intended to rely on gravitation force.

I like all of this but still don’t appreciate how we consume it, I mean how we receive all this green technology advertisement. There are shared interests between nature and greedy humans, shared interests between FRIENDS of nature and WORSHIPER of money, intentions aren’t the same though.

Illuper’s Mihrab

Breakfast Table

I spent the week-end in another haven of mine: in Illu’s room. In her solitary silent space in the end of the walkway of the campus, I feel like we’re in  a “محراب” -sanctuary-. And we are indeed: in this room, with this girl and her laptop always in front of her, there’s the passion of science, the holy quest of knowledge and the never-boring-everlasting discussions about the human nature and ourselves. We never get bored, never run out of discussions to have and things to share and never get tired of each other when one of us is taken away by her passionate speech.

By night, we listened to Sleeping Sun by Nightwish, a band cherished by Illu’ and that I liked. On the loop, the song’s lyrics remind us of some day and some soft wishes. Memories.

We shared movies, we shared little stories, we shared food and…

ImageThis road I walked down with many friends, happy, angry, and ‘drunk’….

“How many roads must a man walk down. Before they call him a man?”B.D

How many surprises are hidden in every sentier we took and that our eyes couldn’t reach because we’re so busy focusing on other things. A friend of mine came by and spent the night with me. After three days of her departure, she called asking me to look below the pellow and guess what? I found the Rumi’s Love poems there. Waaa… She’s hidden the present. I appreciate it very much.. The way she did it is a present :).

Open your eyes. Drop all the glasses and filters you see the world through, and see the world………. through an other GLASSES. LOL… I don’t know..

A poem from the hidden treasor:

Oh! Supreme Lover!

Let me leave aside my worries.

The flowers are blooming

with the exultation of your Spirit

By Allah!

I long to escape the prison of my ego

and lose myself

in the mountains and the desert.

These sad and lonely people tire me.

I long to revel in the drunken frenzy of your love

and feel the strength of Rustam in my hands.

I’m sick of mortal kings.

I long to see your light.

With lamps in hand

the sheikhs and mullahs roam

the dark alleys of these towns

not finding what they seek.

You are the Essence of the Essence,

The intoxication of Love.

I long to sing your praises

but stand mute

with the agony of wishing in my heart.”

Rumi by Deepak Chopra.

Mosquee Hassan II

I went to the book fair in casablanca in order to look for the “Le Petit féroce contre les marmicreux” for a little relation of mine and I ended up  buying everything but it. I bought “one hundred years of solitude” and “Dead souls”. After that, I run to the Mosquee Hassan II in front of the book fair, contemplating the giant building that was beautifuly enjoying the feel of the sky. I thought it was a good idea to take some photos and bring them out. It was curious that I didn’t take any photo of the book fair…

The great gate from where male worshiper enter the mosquee.
